LO2 - Evaluation of Resources

I have decided to take a path that will lead me into a higher education before going into a straight career path from this early.  This will allow me to learn more abstract and unconventional movements and techniques and allow for me to develop my own style and identity as a photographer. I have chosen to take BA Honours Photography course at Sheffield Hallam University. The pre-requisite for this course is 96 -112 Ucas Points. There is no interview required for entry though I will likely be judged on my portfolio to secure entry to the course.

Access To Equipment

Due to UTC Sheffield being a technical college I received access to a large amount of equipment. We were given all access to Canon 750D camera with a variety of lenses, as well as Apple Macs which all featured multiple editing softwares (though I mostly used photoshop). We were also given access to equipment like tripods and larger lights that could be attached to cameras.

Work I have created for my portfolio

I did a shoot for a local band called the Mayfairs as part of my AS Photography work. This involved photographing them and two other bands performing at a local venue. The lighting that was set up in such a way that made it difficult to capture certain types of shots and because the lights were moving around constantly, I was forced to make my shots very quickly instead of taking longer periods of time to line them up. However this lighting did also allow me to capture some more interesting shots with strong prominent colours.

These are some of the edited images that I created as part of my A level photography exam. To capture the original images I set up a projector in a large room with no other source of light. I then took a number of photos using different models whilst using a large variety of images on the projector which I had already selected. After taking these photos I had to edit them before they could be submitted for the exam. I decided not to edit the images too heavily however as thought that they were already strong as they were and if I added too many editions it could detract from the image.

I originally took these photos for a project unrelated to my college work, as a favour to friends who were in a band, before I ended up using them in multiple college projects, including a unit in which we were instructed to create a music magazine. I like these photos because I think they're strong images whilst not featuring any editing or sophisticated techniques.

This last collection of images is from experimenting with camera and photoshop during the early stages of my academic career at UTC Sheffield. I took most of the photos around Sheffield city centre without any specific ideas in mind, instead just spontaneously capturing whatever seemed like it would create interesting images. Whilst editing the photos in photoshop I mainly experimented with colour and mixing images together to see if I could create anything exciting or in some cases humorous.

Budget Plan

I wish to build a portfolio and pursue a career in the photography industry I will need to have permanent access to the correct equipment. This will require me to make several purchases:

Canon EOS 1300D DSLR - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-1300D-Camera-EF-S18-55-F3-5-5-6/dp/B01CU8JZPU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1528671705&sr=8-3&keywords=canon+dslr

By purchasing this I will have my own lightweight professional camera, which will allow for a variety of different types of shots as well as offering me options on how I wish to make the photo appear before capturing the image, which will result in me having to do much less post changes to my images, the camera comes with it's own lens which will save me money aswell as letting me instantly have the ability to start taking photos. (£329.99)

Insurance for Camera - https://www.protectyourgadget.com/quote/results/

If I wish to pursue a career in photography, my camera will be most important piece of equipment, thereby I would need to get in insured so if anything were to happen unexpectedly I could quickly recover without having to spend much money and get back into taking photos again. (£6.95 - £45.00 monthly)

Adobe Creative Cloud - https://www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud.html

Purchasing adobe creative cloud will give me access to multiple editing software, this will allow me to make changes to my images after I have taken them, it also give me multiple ways to present these images and allow me to branch into different styles of visual art (e.g. video) (£15.49 monthly)

Tripod - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lightweight-Tripod-TAIROAD-Portable-Panasonic/dp/B071QX9892/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1528672642&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=tripod&psc=1

Buying a tripod will allow me to stabilise the camera in certain positions easily. This will all me to try different styles of photography, such as long exposure and panoramas. I would prefer a lightweight tripod as it is easier to carry around and would put less strain on me when I have to be moving around with all of my equipment. (£39.99)

Camera Flash - https://www.amazon.co.uk/APEMAN-Speedlite-Display-Cameras-Standard/dp/B01NCWKDS1/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1528673850&sr=1-1&keywords=canon+eos+1300d+flash

I will need a flash for my camera to help me take shots in poor lighting as well as letting me choose how I want the subject of my photos to be lit. Having an attachable light, will make capturing images much easier and will free up my hands meaning that I can put more focus into framing and composition without having to work around a particular light source (£49.99)

SD cards - https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-Ultra-Memory-Class-Black/dp/B0143IIP4W/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1528674082&sr=1-5&keywords=camera+sd+card

I will need SD cards to store my images onto. A 64gb SD will allow me to store a large quantity of images on a single card, which will make it easier to keep track of where images are stored. (£16.99)
